2009, le Dr. Maelström est encore parmi nous...
Dr. Maelstrom (Tonietta Walters,US curator) and a bunch of international artists have been working for years to evidence a new paradigm around visual arts, outlining the links between cognitive sciences and visual arts.
This group exhibition has 3 sections.
Part 1, THE MULTISENSORIAL SAFARI, evocates the cognitive basic trilogy, i.e. the three basic functions that are used for channeling information towards the brain (Rational construction, intuitive and non-rational information and sensation based impressions). At the entrance, visitors are invited to take off their shoes and socks and, if they agree to wear it, a brain activity measurement helmet presented with the relevant explanation.
This section will gather artists around a restricted frame and job description based on multicultural references and low tech media. Actually, the target is to illustrate the mathematic construction of the 64 hexagrams, and each of 4 participating artist will have to illustrate 16 hexagrams in black or one of the 3 basic colors. Medium will be based on scrolls more or less like Chinese paintings. Around these visual elements, the exhibition presents stimuli for the 4 other senses. A deambulatorium conducts barefoot visitors through the 5 elements. Food and drinks are offered with sweet, bitter, salty, hot, sweet-sour and sour tastes. Some perfume fountain is inserted. The auditive functions are also stimulated both by music from Xenakis and perhaps, some ad hoc original soundtrack.
A second section, THE ACADEMIC BOX, pinpoints the state of art and the overlaps between cognitive sciences and visual arts. This more pedagogical section is as simple as possible and presents a synthetic overview of the most significant research and publications in the field. A short lexicon will summarize the major concepts that are stimulating this research as well as artist during the past and nowadays such as uncertainty, ambiguity, paradoxical reality, incorporated hazard etc.
Last section, THE COGNITIVE ARTLAB is the place where the visitor receives a painting alike diagram on frame (done by sophisticated color printer) of his own brain reactions during his short journey within the world of cognitive sciences.
SPECIFIC DIMENSIONS OF THE PROJECT
1. Multicultural dimension by mixing references such as Bayeux Tapestry, Yi King, Chinese traditional paintings in a « chop soy bazaar » with the glass ceiled 3 primary colors, tastes from over the world such as Belgian chocolate, German bitter, etc. and very contemporary music and sounds;
2. Low tech and high tech confrontation between 64 scrolls and high tech helmet and a massive printing tool adapted to a idiosyncratic task ;
3. Multisensorial and multilogical;
4. Diachronic with historical references, even a little out of the human historical memory with a walk through the 5 elements, the 3 primary colors, Taoism and a scientific dazibao ;
5. Serious and funny, strange and familiar ;
6. Alerting the artistic community on the actual challenge : human brain, cognition are no longer such a terra incognita as before ;
7. Pedagogical in a comprehensive approach;
8. Interactive in some metonymic way;
